English remains key to the development of secure literacy skills and thereby access to much of the rest of the curriculum. In Key stage 2 work is focussed on developing basic reading and writing skills to enable pupils to become independent workers. A range of fiction and non-fiction texts are used to foster an interest in the written word and promote imagination for their own writing.
