During Key Stage 3 pupils have the opportunity to participate in a range of activities related to the Design and Technology curriculum. All pupils participate in programmes of design using a variety of media. Pupils predominantly work using wood and plastic.
During Key Stage 3 there is an expectation that the designs that are developed will move from simplistic to complex. This means that during Key Stage 3 we would be encouraging pupils to develop their skills up to the point where they can construct simple items of furniture using recognised joints. The quality of the work that the pupils produce is extremely good and there are photographs on this page that demonstrate the quality of their outcomes.
During Key Stage 3 pupils will be introduced to aspects of CAD (Computer Aided Design) as part of the design process. Pupils are encouraged to access the Internet in order to examine comparable designs for artefacts so as to determine the means of construction and to decide methods by which projects in school can be constructed.
Pupils will also experience during Key Stage 3 aspects of control technology and this will include both the construction of models controlled by laptop computers and the opportunity to visit the City of Nottingham’s E-Learning Centres to use the CAD and control equipment which is stage of the art and demonstrates how work in school can be translated into industry in the future.
