Many pupils in Key Stage 4 will have the opportunity to participate in exam-based activities for Design Technology. The school has a tradition of achievement at Key Stage 4 GCSE. There is also the opportunity for pupils to engage in the Entry Level examinations for Design Technology.
The model for the GCSE in Design Technology requires the pupils to develop a very detailed portfolio of evidence which demonstrates their work from its beginnings through to its conclusion. This portfolio of evidence includes the development from rough sketch drawings through to detailed pencil drawings and computer-aided design in order to realise the completed artefact at the end of the projects.
Pupils during the course need to demonstrate that they have researched the use, production and manufacture of items similar to their own within industry and need, through this research programme, to demonstrate the ways in which they would produce a large number of their products (batch or mass production) in order to develop a business solution.
All pupils from Key Stage 3 to Key Stage 4 will have developed skills in a range of areas within the workshop environment and pupils who have developed Key Stage products for GCSE will be competent in the use of all the hand tools and the vast majority of the machinery and power tools within the workshop environment.
A number of examples of pupils’ achievements are included on this page and the school is confident of its on-going success in this area in the future.
