At the beginning of the academic year 2004/05 the school embarked on an ambitious development programme for vocational education which included the development of Motor Engineering at NVQ Level 3 and Construction through the City and Guilds. At this time a small number of pupils were given the opportunity to participate in these programmes within curriculum time and this proved over the course of the year to be extremely successful resulting in recognition of the school’s achievements on Teachers TV. The TV programme illustrated how the school had developed vocational education in Motor Engineering alongside EMTEC, a City of Nottingham training agency for Motor Engineering and also the programmes which were developed in conjunction with a local college for construction involving the development of skills in bricklaying, plastering, painting and decorating and construction health and safety.
In the school’s second year of development in Vocational Education, all pupils at Key Stage 4 are now offered the opportunity to participate in appropriate programmes of Vocational Education study and pupil numbers involved have trebled since the first year providing those pupils with the opportunity to achieve 5 GCSE passes A-C on completion of the Motor Engineering Course and, with the change of the construction qualification from City & Guilds to Edexcel, the potential to achieve two GCSE results following successful completion of the construction course.
The school is clear in its goal that the development of these programmes provides yet another stepping stone into the world of employment for all of our pupils and the Motor Engineering courses in particular provide significant opportunities for individual pupils to move from education straight into the world of employment following completion of courses at the end of Key Stage 4.
