TEACHING AND LEARNING STYLES
English lessons usually follow the format advocated by the National Literacy Strategy of a "three-part lesson". Lessons start with a reading of a text, allowing pupils to read aloud, share a text or to read silently to themselves. Pupils are then taught to examine a specific aspect of this text, depending on the objective of the lesson (Word level work). The lesson would then examine the text as a whole (Sentence level work), and finally pupils would be encouraged to respond to the text in a variety of ways (Text level work).
English lessons are usually taught using a multi-sensory approach, where pupils engage with the text in a variety of practical ways. Media texts and ICT are used to encourage all pupils to engage with the texts, particularly those who may find reading and writing more difficult. Co-operative working is also encouraged, eg whole class groups producing a single written text; paired speaking and listening tasks; more able pupils acting as "buddies" for reading activities; small group role plays.
ASSESSMENT AND RECORDING
On entry to Westbury all pupils are given a range of literacy-based tests in order to establish vocabulary, reading, comprehension and spelling ages. We use the Schonell single work test and the Aston Index vocabulary, spelling and comprehension tests. At an appropriate stage pupils are asked to produce an example of "free-writing". All pupils are tested on an annual basis (where possible) using these tests.
Assessment tasks are planned as part of each term’s module. Pupils are set independent tasks which enable staff to gauge progress in all three attainment targets. Information gained from these tasks is recorded on the English "Small Steps" tracking portfolio.
At the end of Years 6 and 9, pupils achieving National Curriculum Level 3 on Teacher Assessment, may be entered for the National Curriculum optional tests. Both of these afford an opportunity for external assessment of pupil progress and for pupils to begin to develop an understanding of and familiarity with external examination procedures.
In Key Stage 4 all pupils are offered the opportunity to be entered for Entry Level examinations. The GCSE English Language examination is offered, where appropriate, ie to those pupils operating at Level 4 or above, or when a pupil has expressed a desire to be entered.
HOMEWORK
The English Department adheres to and implements the school’s Homework Policy. Half of all homework given in Key Stage 3 has a literacy or English focus. Key Stage 4 pupils are encouraged to take coursework home with a focus on modifying and improving pieces independently.
CROSS-CURRICULAR LINKS
The English Department supports the development and implementation of the Whole-School Literacy Targets within its own department. Literacy also draws on links between English and many of the other subjects taught. It particularly recognises the importance of Information Communication Technology and encourages pupils to select where and when it is appropriate to use ICT to prepare and modify their work.
EQUAL OPPORTUNITIES
Within the English Department we implement the School’s Equal Opportunities Policy by offering all pupils access to the whole curriculum, regardless of race, culture, gender and ability. We endeavour to challenge stereotyping through the use of appropriate and regularly reviewed teaching materials and resources.
BUDGET MANAGEMENT
Within the English Department we endeavour to adhere to all advice from the Headteacher and LEA regarding financial management. All monies to support curriculum development are allocated following the receipt of bids made by curriculum co-ordinators at the start of the financial year. Successful bids reflect the priorities within the School Improvement Plan and are subject to monitoring by the Headteacher. The Department will prepare a spending plan prior to the start of the financial year. This plan will be prepared following:
The Department’s bid will then be determined and submitted for approval.
During the course of the year the curriculum co-ordinator will manage the department’s budget and follow the school’s financial procedures. The department’s budget will be monitored through regular and careful scrutiny of the monthly financial reports distributed by the Office Manager.
PLANNING FOR FUTURE DEVELOPMENT
As a department we will plan for the future development of English teaching and listening in line with:
