STATEMENT OF INTENT
Geography is concerned with the world we live in and the way we live our lives. It is a world which is getting smaller by the day. Geography is about where we live, how we earn our living, what we eat, where it came from and how it was produced, how we spend our leisure time and where we go on holiday. Geography is about our world and our effect upon it.
The units of work we will study in Geography at Westbury have been developed to meet the requirements of the National Curriculum, whilst at the same time providing a balanced, meaningful and coherent curriculum. All courses will be regularly reviewed and updated as required by changes in the educational and wider world. Regular assessment of what the pupils have learned and what skills have been developed will help provide for progress and continuity.
A very important aspect of the work in Geography will be the development of individual skills, both core skills and subject specific skills. Fieldwork and visits will be used whenever appropriate and pupils will be encouraged to develop their social skills through co-operative activities and group work. The development of those skills needed for independent learning will also be a priority. All pupils will be given equal access to all areas of the curriculum irrespective of race or gender. The advantages of interdependence and cultural diversity will also be emphasised with racial and sexual stereotypes challenged whenever they occur.
A range of different teaching and learning styles will be employed with the aim of capturing the imagination of the young people and making the work interesting. The pupils at Westbury have all failed at their previous schools and often have poor self-esteem through low academic achievement. The aim is to provide work which meets the needs of the individual but is also of academic value and presents them with a challenge. Praise and recognition of achievement will be central to the work in Geography. All the young people will be encouraged and helped to fulfil their potential and as a part of this process, Year 10 and 11 students will have the opportunity to follow external examination courses.
