Teaching and Learning Style
In Physical Education lessons the same basic format is followed:
Theory lessons generally follow the three- part lesson format advocated by the National Learning Strategy: Lessons start with either outlining what the task of the lesson is or a recap of the previous lesson and the key words and phrases that were used. Then the main body of the lesson centres on the taught element. Here if the content is theoretical we strive to make it as real to the pupils as possible and provide them with 'handles' on which to hang this new information Plenary - often with a question and answer session to ensure that learning has occurred and that weaknesses are recognise ready for the next lesson.
Assessment and Recording
The most important assessment that occurs is via the continual observation of the pupils and the daily questioning sessions that are an integral part of every physical education lesson to determine that the pupils have learnt and understood what they have been taught. Further to this more formal assessment also occurs. At the end of every half term or term the pupils are formally assessed using the GCSE criteria. All of these assessments are recorded. Note also any activity that falls into the PE criteria which occurs in sixth session is also regularly assessed and recorded.
Homework
The Physical Education Department adheres to and implements the School’s Homework Policy. These tasks are generally given to pupils on an individual basis with a focus on a target they want to specifically improve on.
Cross-Curricula Links
The Physical Education Department supports the development and implementation of a range of cross curricula links. It supports the Whole School Literacy targets and Maths targets and actively strives to develop a greater familiarity and confidence with Information, Communication Technology. This is especially important when pupils video their specific activities for their GCSE exam coursework.
Equal Opportunities
Within the Physical Education Department we implement the School’s Equal Opportunities Policy by offering all pupils access to the whole curriculum, regardless of race, culture, gender and ability. We endeavour to challenge stereotyping through the use of appropriate and regularly reviewed teaching materials and resources.
Budget Management
Within the Physical Education Department we endeavour to adhere to all advice from the Headteacher and LEA regarding financial arrangement. All monies to support curriculum development are allocated following the receipt if bids made Curriculum coordinators at the start of the financial year. Successful bids reflect the priorities within the School Improvement Plan and are subject to monitoring by the Head. The department will prepare a spending plan prior to the start of that financial year. This plan will be prepared by the following:
The department’s bid will then be determined and submitted for approval. The department’s budget will then be determined and submitted for approval. During the course of the year curriculum coordinator will manage the department’s budget and follow the schools financial procedures (blue order form). The department’s budget will be monitored through regular and careful scrutiny of the monthly financial reports destitute by the Office Manager.
Planning For Future Development
As a department we will plan for the future development for Physical Education teaching in line with:
Health and Safety Policy Statement
Staff working in the Physcial Educaiton Department should all be familiar with the schools Health and Safety Policy and will endeavour to adhere to this policy at al times. Whilst teaching P.E. staff will adhere to the rules that are specific to the activity being taught. Staff understand that the health and safety of both pupils and staff is of the utmost importance.
