RATIONALE
Religious belief is a feature of life that has reality for the majority of people in the world. Religious experience is based on the acknowledgement of a spiritual reality that gives significance to life that transcends the material world. Hence Religious Education is an essential part of every pupils educational entitlement, learning about and from religions enriches and extends pupils understanding about the world in which they live.
Religious Education should help pupils to convey their feelings and thoughts, to experience and develop and awareness of the spiritual dimensions of life and eventually to approach questions of ultimate value. Through Religious Education pupils are taught about the world around them and are given a sense of identity and of relationships with other individuals and groups. Individual's viewpoints must be respected however, and what is taught does not seek to commend a particular faith or viewpoint.
The pupils in Westbury School have a wide range of emotional and behavioural difficulties and thus Religious Education must be related to their experience and needs. What is taught to those pupils whose developmental status is at early levels will contain little that is formal or explicitly religious, it will, however, reflect a sense of awe and wonder about the world. Pupils should have the opportunity to explore the nature of religion in such a way that their views are based on sound knowledge and thoughtful reflections. Religious Education should promote self-awareness and reflectiveness to assist pupils in their own explorations of the meaning of life and their beliefs and convictions.
