THE BIBLE : KEY STAGE 3
KEY IDEAS: The Bible as an important book for Christians using the Bible in Workshops
Learning Objectives
Pupils should be able to
- Demonstrate awareness of how the Bible developed.
- Demonstrate some understanding of the role of the Bible in church and in the lives of Christians.
- Reflect and respond imaginativley to biblical materials.

Using the Bible

Stories from Old and New Testaments
- Key figures and leaders, e.g. Moses, David, John the Baptist
- Stories about key events in Jesus' life

Learning Outcomes
Learning outcomes will be :
- Looks at a collection of assorted Bibles.
- Talks about different books in the Bible.
- Experiences visit to local church to see/touch/read from the Bibles available there
- Meets local Christians and ask appropriate questions about how they use the Bible and why it is important to them
- Listens and/or responds listens to stories from Old/New Testaments
- Retells a New/Old Testament story about a key character.
- Reflects on aspects of stories Jesus told
ISLAM
KEY STAGE 2
KEY IDEAS: Muslim Family Life Respect for everyone: parents, elders and children.
Learning Objectives
Pupils should be able to
- Recognise and respond thoughtfully to some of the features which distinguish Muslim family life.
Suggested Teaching Content
Pupils should encounter
Home life
- Daily salah - prayer is a special part of home life
- Celebration in the home, Ramadan, fasting during daylight hours, breaking the fast each evening, Id-ul-Fitr
- Waiting for the new moon, parties, gifts and cards
- The Qur'an - how it is treated in the home - placed above all books, wrapped, washing before touching.
Learning Outcomes
Learning outcomes will be
- Identifies precious objects. Talks about how we take care of them.
- Demonstrates ability to wait patiently.
HINDUISM
KEY STAGE 2
KEY IDEAS: Hindu Families Special Relationships.
Learning Objectives
Pupils should be able to
- Demonstrate some understanding of the Hindu home as a special place for Hindu families.
- Identify the home shrine as a special place set apart in Hindu celebrations.
- Demonstrate awareness of some aspects of Hindu celebrations and respond thoughtfully to these.
Suggested Teaching Content
Pupils should encounter
Hindu Homes
- Relationships in the family (e.g. family bond between brothers and sisters expressed in festivals of Raksha Bandhan, when sisters tie a Rakhi (decorative thread) on brothers' right wrists)
- Extended family relationships, cousin-sisters
- Respect for grandparents, often living with family
- Contact with other families in Britain and India
Worship in the Home
- Puja (worship) in the home
- The shrine
- Special images (murtis) to whom family offer puja
- Offering - flowers, light, incense, food, water
- The Arti ceremony.
Special Occasions
- Divali- preparation in home e.g. cooking food, exchanging cards, welcome offered with rangoli or alpana patterns, decorating the home with divas (small lamps made from clay)
- Birthdays of Rama and Krishna
- Stories about Rama and Krishna (e.g. the child Krishna, often mischievous, but always loved)
Learning Outcomes
Learning outcomes will be
- Looks at, discusses or responds to pictures of people in their own immediate and extended family
- Finds out where families come from and where they have relatives
- Identifies India and the united Kingdom on a world map or globe
- Listens/responds and participates in explanation and demonstrations of Raksha Bandhan
- Participates in setting up a shrine in the classroom
- Sets up a shrine in the home corner and talks about how it would be kept in a Hindu home
- Looks at and talks about artefacts (e.g. images of the Gods and the 'Arti')
- Experiences and celebrates special occasions in own lives
- Talks about and explores feelings about special times in their own lives
- Experiences aspects of Hindu celebrations
- Listens to and talks about stories from Hindu scriptures and looks at illustrated versions of the story.
